Debra Askanase’s interview with me about my Horn of Africa “experiment” on Google+ has been picked up by the Red Cross’ “What We’re Reading!”

That’s awesome.

Long post, but the main gist of it that I took away was this

“The way social media works, and should work, is that everybody talks about their own interests and passions, and people follow whomever they choose. Social media does not work if every one of the 45 million Google+ users all talk about your short list of topics.”

Dear Big Wigs on G+

How to Utterly Misposition Yourself on Social Media

EDIT: There is a misconception in the comments. I still follow these people, and I still like these people. But I am calling them to task for completely overlooking the real issues of today from their tech angles/social media angles, and going with shallow fluff stories that come across as pretentious and elitist. And I stand by that assessment.

I follow some big wigs here on G+. And after spending a day talking about international relations, police brutality, protests, and the economy… Let me be honest. Seeing your posts today, man, some of you have some shallow ass topics that people making under $100k really just don’t give a shit about.

Way to disconnect with what is going on in the world! The fact that more people here give a FUCK what Wine Vineyard you are investing in more than what is happening between protesters and the police on Wall Street is pathetic. It’s Marie Antoinette, and you telling the world to eat cake.

Having an audience is a responsibility! Some people stepped up today. Mohamed Mansour Some did not. Mike Elgan Robert Scoble etc. Elgan invested in a wine vinyard. Scoble’s big question was about whether michael arrington should start a blog and “Here is the definition of a first-world problem: do I put Google+ on the left screen or the right?”

The issues going on today had a large social media angle, and both failed at covering it at all.

You people really need to learn how to read the tea leaves. Wrong time to look elitist when people are literally talking French Revolution!
