Ok, Friday night memory lane time: I’m curious, what are your first memories of a. Consuming what you’d consider contemporary-style social media and b. Producing it.

If you say BBSs, fine: you’ve been online for a long time. What were the first blogs or podcasts you discovered?

Mine: downloading podcast episodes of The Dawn and Drew Show from computers in the University library to a little $10 mp3 player I bought.

And production memories? Had to be a blogger blog, but I remember more clearly editing hosted wikis first.

You?

“8 is great.”

Google+ has been in field trial for just over 8 weeks, and every day the team is honored, humbled and energized by your feedback. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Seriously. Keep letting us know how we’re doing, and we’ll keep working to make Google+ even better.

8 is also the number of features we’ve launched since Monday, so I figured I’d post a quick week in review. Have a gr8 weekend everyone! (Cheesy, I know ๐Ÿ˜‰

1. The new +1 button for websites lets you share web pages with your circles. (http://goo.gl/jlBBf)

2. You can now see all the photos you’re tagged in on a single page. (http://goo.gl/D0g6w)

3. When you’re viewing a photo album, you can now see who else it’s shared with. (http://goo.gl/KXpoj)

4. You can now re-share posts from the Google+ Android app (http://goo.gl/MxgR1)

5. You’ll now see a notification when someone you’ve invited joins Google+. (http://goo.gl/SeuGC)

6. You can now Ignore people — for those times when you’re not interested in what a (well-intentioned) person is sharing. (http://goo.gl/n8GhR)

7. Add to circle notifications now distinguish between people who’ve “added you” and people who’ve “added you back.” (http://goo.gl/XQ5aS)

8. The Google+ bar now floats at the top of your screen while you scroll. (http://goo.gl/K0ODY)

p.s. Our What’s New page (http://goo.gl/0fcNs) also includes this information, so let me know if you’d rather not see these summary posts in the future.

I can totally relate to this…

I can totally relate to this…

“Wait, where’s Spybot? The program I told you to leave on there?”

“I uninstalled that. It was messing up my computer. It wouldn’t let me play any of my games.”

But at least you have this fake scanner. Yes, it was Spybot. Not the programs that I told you would cause the exact problems we’re looking at right now, you impossible dipsh–“Wait, where’s the antivirus?”

“Oh, I got rid of that, too. My cousin was downloading music, and it wasn’t letting him open the files, so we had to get rid of it.”

“Sure, sure. Now, this is going to seem like an odd request, but for this next step, I’m going to need you to take out your dick, and lay it on your laptop’s keyboard.”

If you live in California, and you have been a victim of sexual assault, stalking, or domestic violence, it appears that you may now be able to require that Google+ let you use a pseudonym. To do so, you need to register in the Safe at Home program, and then present that registration information to Google.

It is possible that Google may legally side-step the law by prohibiting registered victims of domestic, sexual or stalking abuse from obtaining a Google profile. I would certainly hope they aren’t that callously attached to the “real name” policy.

For a details on the bill, see Bill Adding Privacy Protections for Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault Victims Goes to Governor – Press Releases – Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett http://j.mp/peyxbb

For program registration information, see Safe at Home Welcome – California Secretary of State http://j.mp/qH14Vl and http://j.mp/qfTW2B on how to enroll.

The bill would also prohibit a person, business, or association from intentionally publicly posting or displaying on the Internet specified personal information of a program participant or other persons residing at the same address if the participant has made a demand on the person, business, or association to not disclose that information, as specified. โ€” http://j.mp/qBV4BS
