Last night I was in a hangout with a new friend, who we’ll simply call “A”. A had found their profile on G+ was removed because it contained an alias name and not a real name. I’ve been seeing this happen a lot in the past few days. If you are serious about using G+ to its potential, you may wish to consider ‘outing’ yourself and letting us know who you really are. If not, then perhaps it’s not for you. My take? G+ is about real people, not hiding behind anonymoty online. But there seems to be a double standard. Strawberry Singh is someone I’ve met & networked with online and happens to be a big part of Second Life (something I’m not really familiar with). But her account was removed because G+ didn’t like her use of an avatar and alias.
So the question is… does this mean people like 50 Cent, Lady Gaga and Snoop Dogg will have to be booted, too? I don’t see that yet…but because they’re celebrities they get treated to a double standard… how does G+ not know that Strawberry is not a celebrity in her own right? What difference does it make? I’m following people called Not Safe For Work, Fuzz Aldrin, Sassy Suspiria and Berrie Pelser, all of whom use an avatar and happen to have interesting names… does this mean they’re going to get slashed, too?
Some good discussion going on at the article below.
